Akkoy PDF Print E-mail

Akkoy is a small village on the outskirts of Didim. Its cobbled streets offer charm and an insight into its history. It was inhabited by the Greeks in the early 1900,s. The are building covenants to preserve the exisiting buildings, which are made from local white stone, whreby the name of the village was created - "Ak" meaning white + "koy" meaning village gave the name "Akkoy".

The result of the Greek inhabitants was to leave behind fine examples of their architecture. Now although very old, Akkoy is worth a visit to experience the village way of life, albeit what is now a reasonably busy throughfare route for vehicles.

Typical examples of good building practice by the Greeks are the stone wall houses in Akkoy are cool in summer and warm in winter. High stone walls conceale courtyards on many levels. The windows are orientated so that they never look directly onto those of a neighbouring house, alternatively they open to the best breeze, supplying air circulation and views across the village streets.

Other features in Akkoy are a converted library, the largest village library in Turkey; bird watching for peregrines, kestrels, flamingo's, pelicans in and around Akkoy and the Menderes river. There are also Strawberry plantations at the Tasburun, just outside Akkoy and a local Market held on thursdays. Best buys: Ask for olive oil or olive oil soaps or local brewed wine best quality and also local bread which the ladies make can be tasted. Also located in Akkoy is Cafe Olive, which is as its sounds a cafe, but not only that also has a small Art gallery. It belongs to a local man and his wife and is well worth a visit.
